As the founder and CEO of Little people's Cove I also truly belive in teaching a child life skills through play. My son has learning disabilities and I am always thinking of creative ways to teach him life skills through the power of toys and pretend play. We have a wooden play kitchen that I have been using to teach my children the skills of measuring foods with measuring devices. We work on reading through recipes. Also they have been learning proper nuttition in the form of creating healthy meals with pretend food. What better way to learn than through the eyes of a child.

A great educational and inexpensive gift are Mexican jumping beans. Many people remember Mexican jumping beans when they were children, and haven't seen them in years. Others wonder if they are real ! Yes they do exist... www.amazingbeans.com is a supplier of real jumping beans. They send jumping beans in hinged plastic boxes and include a game sheet and educational information about Mexican jumping beans. They are incredibly entertaining to children and adults....they are hilarious! www.amazingbeans.com also offers free shipping!

There's a lot of great educational toys out there, but, unfortunately, not every toy is equal...

Actually, another thing that parents need to worry about is finding the best toy for their own child, regardless if it may have worked for another child.

Great write up!

Well, I sort of agree, it's just really difficult to pick a reputable store. Chances are they all source their toys from the same wholesaler. Of course, it is possible to build reputation over the years.

This is absolutely great. I love when people understand what kids really needs. Well, these kits will definitely keep them off the computer games for a good while. Hats off to Thames & Kosmos.

Discovery Toys can't be found in stores, but are some of the best educational/developmental toys around. They are sold exclusively through educational consultants who can advise parents on which skills will be developed in their child through each particular toy. Many of the toys have won awards from Dr. Toy, Oppenheim Toy Portfolio and other independent testers. The quality and safety are unconditionally guaranteed and many toys are wonderful for special needs kids, too. Please visit us at www.toysofdiscovery.com for more info.

A great educational green toy is "The Kids Kit To Save The Planet From Plastic Bags". There's an educational booklet (lots of adults say: "I didn't know that" when they read it!), 2 organic fairtrade cotton bags and safe fabric paint pens to decorate these bags. After the kids learn about why plastic bags are bad for the environment, then they'll remind parent to take "their bags" to the store - so you have a built in reminder! http://www.SustainableBags.Net to purchase them.
